Our vision
Physical Education plays a vital role in supporting children’s physical health, confidence and wellbeing. At our school, PE helps pupils develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to lead active, healthy lives, both now and in the future.
Through high‑quality PE, we aim to foster a love of movement, teamwork and challenge, while ensuring every child feels confident and included.
How PE is taught
We deliver our PE curriculum using the Get Set 4 PE scheme of learning. This provides a progressive, well‑sequenced curriculum that supports pupils’ physical development from Early Years through to Year 6.
PE is taught weekly and includes a balance of skill development, physical activity and reflection. Lessons are structured, purposeful and inclusive, ensuring all pupils are actively engaged. Pupils are taught by a sports coach weekly for an hour as well as an hour with their class teacher.
The Get Set 4 PE approach
Get Set 4 PE is built around clear progression and inclusive practice. It focuses on developing:
- Physical skills – agility, balance, coordination, strength and control
- Cognitive skills – decision‑making, tactics and understanding rules
- Social skills – teamwork, communication and leadership
- Personal skills – confidence, resilience, motivation and perseverance
Lessons are carefully planned so that skills are introduced, practised and revisited, helping pupils build confidence over time.
What children learn
Across the school, pupils experience a wide range of physical activities, including:
- Fundamental movement skills
- Games and team sports
- Dance
- Gymnastics
- Athletics
- Outdoor and adventurous activities
As pupils progress, they learn to apply skills in more complex situations, make decisions independently and evaluate their own performance.
Competition, cooperation and personal best
PE at our school values both competition and cooperation. Pupils are encouraged to:
- Work as part of a team
- Compete fairly and respectfully
- Set personal goals and strive to improve
- Celebrate effort and achievement
Opportunities are provided for pupils to take part in intra‑school and, where appropriate, inter‑school sporting events.
Health and wellbeing
PE supports pupils’ understanding of the importance of physical activity for physical and mental wellbeing. Children learn how exercise contributes to:
- Healthy bodies
- Positive mental health
- Improved concentration and resilience
These messages are reinforced through PE lessons, assemblies and wider school life.
Inclusion and participation
Get Set 4 PE is designed so that all pupils can take part and succeed. Lessons are adapted to meet different needs, ensuring that:
- Activities are accessible and inclusive
- All pupils experience success
- Confidence and enjoyment are prioritised
High expectations are maintained for everyone, with support provided where needed.
Assessment and progress
Assessment in PE is ongoing and formative. Teachers observe pupils’ participation, skill development and understanding during lessons. Progress is measured through:
- Improved movement and coordination
- Increased confidence and independence
- Ability to apply skills in different activities
The focus is on personal progress and enjoyment, not just performance.
In summary
Through our PE curriculum, children leave primary school with:
- Secure physical skills and coordination
- Confidence to take part in physical activity
- Understanding of teamwork, fairness and resilience
- Positive attitudes towards health and fitness
Physical Education at our school helps pupils develop healthy habits, strong character and a lifelong enjoyment of being active.
