Welcome to Art & Design
A guide for parents, carers and visitors
At our school, Art and Design is an important part of every child’s education. Through the CUSP Art and Design curriculum, pupils are encouraged to think, work and communicate like artists. They are supported to build confidence, creativity and skill while exploring a wide range of materials, techniques and artistic traditions.
Our curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, ensuring all children can succeed, enjoy art and express themselves creatively.
What children learn
Children experience a broad and balanced art curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6. They revisit key artistic disciplines each year, becoming more confident and skilled over time. These include:
- Drawing
- Painting
- Printmaking
- Textiles
- 3D work and sculpture
- Collage and mixed media
By returning to these areas regularly, pupils develop their skills step by step and learn how techniques build on one another.
Working artistically
Alongside practical skills, children learn about the elements of art, helping them understand how artwork is created and how artists communicate ideas and emotions. These include:
- Shape and line
- Colour and tone
- Texture and form
- Space and composition
Children are encouraged to talk about their own work and the work of others using appropriate artistic language.
Artists, culture and creativity
Pupils explore the work of a wide range of artists, illustrators and designers from different times and cultures. Art is often linked to stories, themes and other subjects, helping children make meaningful connections and understand the wider world.
Talking, thinking and vocabulary
Art lessons place a strong emphasis on speaking, listening and reflection. Children learn key vocabulary and are given regular opportunities to:
- Explain their ideas and choices
- Describe techniques and materials
- Reflect on what works well and how to improve
This supports both creative development and confidence in communication.
How we assess
Assessment in art is ongoing and supportive. Teachers observe children as they work, ask thoughtful questions and look at sketchbooks and finished pieces. Progress is measured by how pupils:
- Apply skills and techniques
- Use artistic language
- Develop ideas and creativity over time
There is no single “right” outcome — creativity and progress are valued.
Inclusion and support
The curriculum is designed so that all children can take part and thrive. Reasonable adjustments are made where needed, such as adapted materials, visual prompts or alternative ways of recording ideas, ensuring every pupil can access and enjoy art lessons.
In summary
Through the CUSP Art and Design curriculum, children leave primary school with:
- Confidence in using a wide range of materials and techniques
- Knowledge of artists, styles and cultural influences
- Strong creative and communication skills
- A lasting enjoyment of art and creativity
Art at our school is about expression, imagination and excellence — and every child is an artist.
During the Spring term, we take part in the CUSP Art Festival which where our children take part in sessions with artists, workshops and submerge themselves in art for a week – CUSP Art Festival | Westfield Primary Academy
