Year 3 – A World of Discovery and Growing Independence!
In Year 3, learning takes an exciting leap as your child embarks on a rich Discovery curriculum packed with fascinating topics. From exploring rocks and soils to uncovering the mysteries of the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages, your child will dive into history, science, and geography with enthusiasm. They will also enjoy learning French—discovering colours, shapes, and everyday vocabulary—and investigating forces and prehistoric art. And that’s just the beginning! For a full overview of all the exciting subjects we cover, please take a look at our detailed curriculum map.
Reading remains a golden thread throughout the curriculum and is supported through the Accelerated Reader programme, encouraging children to read widely and take quizzes that deepen their comprehension and love of books.
Our Maths lessons follow the White Rose scheme, while CUSP English topics are carefully designed to be engaging and challenging, helping children build on the skills they developed in Key Stage 1 while fostering greater independence and collaborative learning as they settle into Key Stage 2. To boost their multiplication and division skills, children use Times Tables Rock Stars both in school and at home, making practise fun and effective.
To enrich their learning, Year 3 pupils enjoy memorable experiences such as visits to Colchester Castle and participating in a joyful Christmas Carol Service at the local Church, bringing history and community spirit to life.
Music is another highlight of Year 3, where we use the Charanga programme. Children compare and contrast songs from different genres including RnB, Reggae, Disco, and Classical music, and learn to play the glockenspiel, developing both their listening and performance skills.
We value strong home-school partnerships and use Class Dojo to keep you informed and involved. You’ll receive regular updates, termly reports, and have opportunities to discuss your child’s progress during parents’ evenings in the autumn and spring terms.
