Year 6 – Preparing for Success and Celebrating Achievement!
In Year 6, your child will embark on a dynamic Discovery Curriculum that deepens their scientific understanding of living things and their habitats, explores the geography of Europe, and expands their French vocabulary with practical language for meeting family members. Pupils will also develop their computing skills with a focus on how Big Data is used and delve into the history of significant monarchs. For a detailed overview of all the exciting learning planned, please explore our curriculum map.
May marks an important milestone as Year 6 pupils sit their SATs. To support their success, we offer additional booster sessions, host parent meetings to provide guidance on how to help at home, and conduct mock exams at school to familiarise pupils with the format and question types. Revision booklets and parent meetings are also provided to encourage effective home study.
Year 6 pupils take on increased responsibility within the school community. They have the opportunity to be elected to the Year 6 Leadership Team, with roles including Head Boy and Head Girl. Other important roles such as librarians and lunchtime helpers help foster leadership and teamwork skills.
A highlight of the year is the three-day residential trip to Mersea, filled with fun activities and team-building games that pupils always enjoy. Before they leave, Year 6 pupils showcase their talents in a spectacular leavers’ play performed at the Haverhill Arts Centre for family and friends. Last year’s production, “I’m an Eleven Year Old, Get Me Out of Here,” was a fantastic celebration of their creativity and confidence.
The year culminates in our special Oscars Ceremony, where pupils dress in their finest to celebrate their achievements and journey through primary school. Throughout Year 6, we also focus on preparing pupils for secondary school through transition days and structured activities, ensuring they move on with confidence and readiness.
We believe in strong home-school partnerships and use Class Dojo to keep you connected. You’ll receive regular updates, termly reports, and have opportunities to discuss your child’s progress during parents’ evenings in the autumn and spring terms.
