Expanding Learning Beyond the Classroom

By the time a child turns 18, they will have spent only about 9% of their waking life in a classroom. Children’s University is all about making the most of the remaining 91% by encouraging learning and personal development beyond school hours.

Research shows that participation in extra-curricular activities can boost academic attainment, strengthen pupils’ positive connection with school, and build self-confidence and resilience. Conversely, children who lack access to these opportunities often fall behind, struggle with confidence, and have lower career aspirations. This contributes to a significant attainment gap, with 25% of children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds not reaching expected levels.

At Westfield , every child is a member of Children’s University. Throughout the school year, we encourage all pupils to engage in a wide range of clubs and activities, both at school and at home. We celebrate these achievements regularly, and in July 2025, we proudly celebrated 75 children graduating after completing over 30 hours of extra-curricular learning. Our Graduation is held at Haverhill Arts Centre and family and friends join us for an evening of celebration.
